Why Choose Therapy With a Human When AI is at Your Fingertips?

Whether you are on board or not, AI is rapidly becoming part of our social landscape. And in a rapidly changing world, why wouldn't you reach for your AI bestie when you're spiralling at 10:30 P.M.? Used intentionally, I do think these tools can be supportive. But is it enough to replace therapy with a human?
Here are a few ways you might integrate AI into your wellness practice:
Journalling and self-reflection prompts
A non-judgemental ear when you feel you need to get something off of your chest
Can provide psychoeducation
Offers you a space to test ideas and explore new ways of being in the world
What AI cannot do:
Bring embodied presence
Notice subtle shifts in body language
Offer emotional attunement and presence
Hold sacred space
Offer space for corrective experiences
Assess for risk
I don't believe that it has to be all or nothing one way or the other. Dichotomous black-and-white binary thinking surrounding how we might use this tool to enhance our lives doesn't mean throwing therapy out of the window nor does mean not engaging with it in a meaningful and intentional way. However, healing happens in connection with another. Being seen, witnessed, and held as you allow yourself to feel and unpack the stuff that feels too heavy to do alone, that's where the magic happens.
How I have personally used AI as a tool for wellness:
Asking for different perspectives on an issue to gain a better understanding of different ways of seeing things
Asking for journal prompts
Asking for insights to deepen my own self-awareness
In Summary: As always, you do you, boo. You know yourself and your needs best. But if you're feeling hella stuck, that might be an indicator that it could be good time to see another human to do some of the deeper work.
TL;DR: AI can help mirror what is already within you. In my work with clients, I help to bridge the gap of insight and transformation into embodied change.
